End of the Year

so here it is!!!! the end of the year is finally here.  i have one single final left and then it's summer time, but wait, i am taking two summer courses this year just to see what it's like.  first, i am taking an online class that is just a regular elective, for the sole purpose of adding credits to my curriculum and second i am taking fabrication of wood and metals.  i must say, i'm pretty excited for that one because now over the summer i will be building stuff and getting credits while doing that.  since it is a summer class it should be a little bit more relaxed and thankfully the beautiful weather will make life so much more enjoyable.  with the past couple days being free i have, for the first time in many months, had nothing to do and what is odd is that i don't like it, so i have been doing my own little series of photoshop work just for the sake of keeping my creative juices flowing!  people...if you love art and design, do it for your love of it!  the only other thing that is new with me is that I'm becoming a fanatic for environmental design.  i want to start using natural materials for my projects and hopefully start to really influence the way that we create things.  for you guys interested in the types of things i am i highly suggest you do a little bit of outside research and check out biomimicry.  it is by far my favorite thing.  i am a strong supporter of nature and i believe the future of our civilization lies in going back to nature for our answers in design.

guys, enjoy your summer, enjoy your life! it's the only one we have so don't waste it ;)

Class Work

For you future design students i just wanted to tell you a little about the types of assignments we are currently doing in the end of the semester.  First off, for Visualization and Representation we have the coolest project ever thanks to Professor Tew.  Basically, each student got to pick a car and make a swipe sheet (inspiration board) and using details from that car design a pair of flip flops for it.  As of right now we are in the ideation process where we are supposed to quickly bust out designs and try and figure out all possible solutions.  For Principles of Form we have a very interesting project that (to be honest) not many people appreciate too much.  Out of seven adjectives our professor chose the one that she thinks we are weakest with creating form... mine is heavy.  Just for an idea some other ones are painterly, highbrow/lowbrow and humble.  Next she chose a material for us to design this thing out of and once again it is something that we aren't to strong with... mine is Canvas.  Some others are leather, wood, metal and paper.  Using these two elements we have to design a device to hold flowers, a device to measure time and a device to hold a small flame.  the purpose for this is to use our creativity and ideation skills with something we are not strong with.  So these are just two of the projects but i thought i would share them with you... if you want some practice let me know and i will give you the exact brief for either assignment ;)

enjoy your life

as we are coming up on the end of the semester things are starting to get really crazy!!! i have housing issues i need to resolve, i have future financial issues, future class issues and all of this on top of an enormous workload from my current classes.   however, i am happier than i have ever been.  its sunny and warm, i'm having so much fun and honestly, i love the spring.  i wish that syracuse would be like this all the time but being in that horrible winter makes you appreciate the sun so much more!  so here i am, loving life and enjoying my time spent here on earth!  i suggest you do the same...it makes life so much better!

the newest thing that i have done which i suggest all of you do is the following.  write a list of all the goals and aspirations you have in life.  write down things you want to accomplish and write down things that are most important to you in your life and for your future.  now take that list and cut it down to 4 or 5 things, and spend all your time and effort on those 4 or 5 things that are the MOST important to you.  trust me, a recent study i looked at shows that 80% of the stuff that you do isn't that important in your life and only 20% of the things you do really matter... for example i have cut my life down to this (but i still do other things like vacation, play sports and have fun)
1) my girlfriend - she is the most important thing to me and i love to spend most of my time taking care of her
2) design - i spend all of my time working on my school projects and outside projects
3) my health - duh... i work out, eat right, sleep well and take care of my self
4) making the world a better place - self explanatory - be nice to others, be good to the world
5) money - this is not for me so i can buy expensive things or so i can have a luxurious lifestyle (i dont need that) this is so i can support my (future) family and give my kids everything they need to be successful in their lives

these 5 things are what i spend every day on, and i have never been happier before!

back from spring break

Hey Guys,
So I know that I haven't been around for a while, obviously spring break put me back from school a little and honestly, it took me up until the end of this week to get back into the swing of things.  However, I truly believe that I learned more in this week than I have all semester.  After being taught by the head of ID on Monday (professor Don Carr) I learned a ton of things about model making that really helped me improve my skills, and after some awesome lectures by Project H and Professor Dennis Earl, I completely changed my idea about industrial design.  Project H helped me see that design is more than making the next best thing, its become a way of helping the world to become a better place.  (If you don't know what Project H is and you are interested in design at all - check out their website at http://projecthdesign.org/). Emily Pilotin (the founder of project H) is an amazing designer who takes a new look at design for humanity and clearly has some amazing potential to change the world.  The other lecture was about biomimicry (copying natures design in our own human designs) which really inspired me to change my ideals about design.  Using nature as inspiration and actually learning from the way nature designs things will really help all designers to make better products.  If you are at all interested in this idea check out asknature.org and click on the link learn about biomimicry and watch the little video.  It's a lecture and I know that it may sound boring but it is an incredible talk and Janine Benyus talks about some extremely important ideas.

Finally I just wanted to take a moment to talk about my future plans as a designer!!! Right now I am a second year and I have a twin in mechanical engineering.  What's funny is that there are two other twins in my year whose twin brothers are also in mechanical engineering.  After talking to my advisor I discovered that engineers and designers work together and therefore I came up with the ground breaking idea of Twintuition.  Obviously it's not a serious idea yet but its a fun little firm that maybe I can talk all of the six of us into doing.  It would have some pretty interesting marketability and honestly it would be a fun future for all of us.
Well, i know this has been a long rant but I hope you enjoy the websites I posted and once again if you have any questions contact me by facebook!!
